Thanks to school, I developed an appreciation and love for digital painting. I wanted to apply some of the principles I learned in that to painting traditionally. I’ve used acrylics for many years but for some reason haven’t dabbled with oil. I decided that this summer will be the time that I learn how to do that. Now, I had these two paintings in my place that I did a couple of years ago with…misguided…subject matter, to put it gently. AKA I have no idea what I was thinking when I made them and absolutely HATED looking at them (I kept them around because it’s not easy to just erase many hours’ worth of work but after a while I just couldn’t deal with looking at them and HAD to do something about that). So I decided that these would be the perfect pieces to use as jumping off points in my mission to become an oil painter. I whited them out (for the most part—as you can see, I left the bits that I deemed acceptable to work with).
This is what the process looked like, from beginning to end (obviously the last one is the finished product). It started as an abstraction/study but then I wanted to push myself a little more with regards to actually creating an environment that had added depth and generally more things going on.
Now it’s time to get to work on the next piece!
